Program Coordinator, First-Year Experience

Rhonda Black is the program coordinator for WVU's First-Year Experience. She designs, implements, assesses and continuously works to improve the First-Year-Seminar across the University and at divisional campuses. Rhonda also directs the Osher Re-entry Scholarship, a $1,000,000 endowment provided by the Bernard Osher Foundation to assist non-traditional students as they return to college seeking their first baccalaureate degree. For more than 23 years, Rhonda has worked at WVU in both academic affairs and student life.

Rhonda earned her B.A. in psychology and her M.A. in educational leadership, both from WVU.
Lt. Col. Jeffrey Burnside

Director, Air Force ROTC

Lt. Col. Jeffrey M. Burnside is the commander for the AFROTC Detachment 915 at WVU. He is responsible for recruiting, training and commissioning officers in the United States Air Force. Lt. Col. Burnside entered the Air Force in 1994, and has experience in all phases of acquisition. He has received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters; the Air Force Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters; and the Joint Service Achievement Medal. 

Prior to working at WVU, he was the deputy director of the Space Logistics Directorate at Peterson AFB in Colorado. He earned his B.S. in physics at Oklahoma State University, his M.S. is computer resource/information management at Webster University, and his M.A. in operations strategy at Air University at Maxwell AFB.

Nancy Byrd

Nan Byrd is the Assistant to the Associate Dean of University College. She also serves as the Administrative Assistant for the Academic Advising Council. She finds that the most enjoyable part of her position is assisting students one-on-one as they go through the processes required by the associate dean' office.

Nan earned her clerical degree at Fairmont State University and will begin working on an event planning minor at WVU this coming fall.

Lt. Col. Steven Clark
Lt. Col. Steven Clark
Director, Army ROTC

Lt. Col. Steven M. Clark is the director of WVU’s Army ROTC battalion and is a professor of military science. He has served the U.S. Army for more than 23 years. His awards include the Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster; the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters; the Army Commendation Medal with five oak leaf clusters; and the Joint Service Achievement Medal. 

Lt. Col. Clark served more than 22 months deployed in combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan, where he served as a Company Commander, Battalion Executive Officer, Brigade Combat Team Logistics Officer, and Joint Logistics Planner. He holds and associate’s degree from Central Texas College,  a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of South Carolina and a master’s of science in adult and continuing education from Kansas State University.

Jeremy Lannon is an Academic Success Adviser for University College. Being an alum of West Virginia University, he enjoys working with students he can easily relate to and also relishes the opportunity of helping them reach their academic goals. 

Jeremy earned his B.S. from West Virginia University in Sport Management and continued his education at the University of West Florida receiving his M.Ed., specifically College Student Personnel Administration.

Freddie McDonald

Freddie McDonald is Assistant Director of the Center for Learning, Advising & Student Success. He works on the day-to-day processes of the advising unit, as well as, recruitment of and outreach to future Mountaineers.

Freddie earned his B.A. in international studies and German from West Virginia University, and his M.A. in Political Science from West Virginia University.

Director, McNair Scholars Program

Betty Mei, Ed.D. is the program director for the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (“McNair Scholars”), where she has worked since 2000. 

Dr. Mei was the winner of the 2015 WVU NAACP Professor of the Year award. In 2003, she was named one of the top 100 most influential people in Morgantown. Before working at WVU, Dr. Mei was an assistant professor at Salem-Teikyo University and an academic director at West Virginia Junior College. 

Dr. Mei earned her B.A. in communication arts at SUNY Plattsburg, her M.A. in speech communication at WVU and her Ed.D. in communication studies and educational psychology at WVU.

Taylor Richmond

Program Coordinator AP, Transitional Programs

Taylor Richmond is the Program Coordinator for Academic Articulation in the Office of Transitional Programs. His main responsibility is to develop seamless pathways for students who earn associate's degrees at other institutions to complete bachelor’s degrees at WVU. He also assists in advising transfer students regarding their first semesters at WVU. 

Taylor earned both his B.S. in political science and his M.P.A. from West Virginia University.
