Academic Standing Scenario 3

Scenario #3

Harold Mountaineer is a first-time student who transferred to WVU. He experienced a traumatic event in the fall term and earned a 0.00 term GPA, which lowered his overall GPA to a 1.95.

Harold Mountaineer transferred to WVU after completing his first year at another university and began his studies in the fall term. Harold experienced a traumatic event in the fall term, but he did not disclose anything to his advisor or instructors. He finished the fall term with a 0.00 term GPA, which lowered his overall GPA to 1.95. Was Harold placed on academic notice after the fall term?

Yes. Harold was placed on academic notice after the fall term. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would have been P1 = Academic Notice.

Harold Mountaineer continued his studies in the spring term and managed to finish out the term with an overall GPA of 2.0. What was Harold’s academic standing after the spring term?

Harold was placed on good academic standing after the spring term because his overall GPA was 2.0. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would have been G1 = Academic Notice (P1).

Harold Mountaineer was placed on academic probation at his former university (before he attended WVU). If he continues his studies in the fall term (year #2) at WVU and his overall GPA drops below 2.0, will he be placed on academic suspension since he had already been placed on academic probation twice?

No. The academic probation at Harold’s prior university has no bearing on WVU’s Academic Probation and Suspension Policy. Harold would be placed on academic probation after the fall term. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would be P2 = Two Probations.

If Harold Mountaineer continues his studies in the next spring term (year #2) and his overall GPA drops below 2.0, will he be placed on academic suspension?

Yes. Harold would be placed on a one-year academic suspension. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would be S1 = One Suspension (P2).

In June of year #2 Harold Mountaineer discloses to his advisor that he experienced a traumatic event in April. The event prevented him from withdrawing from the university prior to the published deadline. Harold’s advisor recommended he petition the dean of his home college for a full-term retroactive withdrawal. The petition and supporting documentation are submitted to the dean, and the full-term retroactive withdraw is granted. Is Harold permitted to continue with his studies in the next (year #3) fall term?

Yes. Because the full-term retroactive withdraw reflects that Harold withdrew from all of his courses for the spring term, his academic standing reverts back to what it was at the end of the previous regular term—Academic Probation. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would be P2 = Two Probations.

If Harold Mountaineer continues with his studies in the next (year #3) fall term and he raises his overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher), will he be placed on good academic standing?

Yes. Harold will be placed on good academic standing after the fall term. His academic standing in DegreeWorks would be G2 = Two Probations (P2).

If you're Harold, what can you do after you're notified that you have been placed on academic suspension?

If you are placed on academic suspension, you should consult your academic advisor to discuss the following options:

  1. Enroll in the summer term or winter intersession at WVU (only) and remediate your overall GPA to 2.0 (or higher) so that you can continue with your studies in the next regular term.
  2. File an academic suspension appeal and ask your college/school for permission to continue with your studies in the next regular term instead of serving the academic suspension. An academic suspension appeal should be submitted if:
    • You demonstrated significant improvement in your grades during the previous term, and you are closer to good academic standing.
    • You can clearly articulate what extenuating circumstances prevented you from achieving good academic standing and present third-party documentation.
  3. Serve your academic suspension. The first academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The second academic suspension is for one calendar year (12 months). The third academic suspension is for three calendar years (36 months). Any subsequent suspension is for three calendar years (36 months).
